Netboot raspberry 3b without SD-Card

Post by BarryT » Saturday 08 December 2018 22:33

Hi all,

as many of you guys (and girls?!) knows about the problems with sd-cards and power cycles/failures on a raspberry..

It seems (now) possible to startup the raspberry 3b totally without the use of a sd-card, and boot completely of the network!
Hooray!
I'm very happy with this news, but... how do we setup something like this?

I want to boot 4 / 5 raspberry's from a image (atm) so in the end it will be 1 server for 5 rpi's, booted from network. (more in the future)

I have a synology, i have a asus router (with merlin).
i also have the possibility to setup a sftp server and ofcourse i have a lot of raspberry 3b+'s for backup (in case i need some).

Where to start, and what to do?

I know PiServer (https://www.raspberrypi.org/blog/piserver/)is a software package for something like this, but:
Then i need another (pi/computer) server to have 24/7 on again, disable my dhcp on the main router (is a no go) and does this let me boot more domoticz-instances complete from network (images)?
I hope for a simple solution and that sd-cards are the past!!

Thanks!

Hello,
I have the same hardware than you (synology, asus with merlin, and raspis) but i cant boot it from network with PXE.
In past i tried but not works for me :-(
maybe you have more luck and can tell us the steps to configure it.

Now i have berryboot and works fine for me
