The question is: what would you like to do? Do you want the cheapest or most reliable solution? You want only to play a bit or improve security of your home?

Probably you will end using at least WiFi + ZigBee/Z-Wave...

Thanks CaesarPL for the answer.

yes of course the budget is to be considered but not only. security and reliability not to follow as well.

I'm comfortable with RPI 3. I'm doing some restoring in my home right now so I'm seeing if all switches can be replaced by home automation modules.

If some reliable modules can be DIY I'm ok as well.

It's not a matter of protocol, but what you want:
- Ready made devices? Then Zigbee and Xiaomi things might be nice.
- The privacy of encrypted communication? Most cheap 433mhz devices don't have encryption.
- Security and leaks? Then don't use too many wifi devices, or not on your normal network.
- Do you like DIY ad Arduino stuff? Or you you need exotic sensors? Then MySensors might be a fun fit.
